Physiotherapists, Doctors and now Professors all concur that “Sport is Unhealthy”

I had another relatively slow day in the exercise department at Winlife. I have taken it down a notch for the last 2 days. Today I did an Ergo metric test at the  Wingate Center for Sports Medicine which burnt off 200 Calories : ) . I swam for 45 minutes and then went to an Aerobics class. Both were great.  Total calories burnt only 1300. Not great but tomorrow I will be at full steam again if my Achilles feels ok and hopefully burn off some serious stuff.

I spent the morning doing the medical tests to determine if my heart is still functioning well under strain. All is in order the doctor was very happy with my fitness levels. I always try to get as much information as possible to see if I am doing a little too much. I need to watch my Maximum heart rate a little more .He was not happy when I told him how much the rate was while running the entire Nike 10Km run 2 months ago. I was running at around 180 Beats per minute for a large part of it .Mostly from the excitement of running in the race at all.

It seems that most medical people don’t think doing intensive sports is healthy for our bodies and it has its price. Strange as it may seem this is what they think. I first encountered it when I went to the physiotherapist at Wingate a few months ago when my Achilles tendinitis happened. He told me that Sport is not healthy.

This afternoon I had another appointment with an interesting Professor Surgeon. The appointment was to get consent to go ahead with the Abdominoplasty surgery(Which I did). He was of the strong opinion the only exercise we should be doing is what we can be able to do when we get to old age which is walking and swimming. He had some interesting theories. He said to me think of any animal there is and see if they suffer from bad backs problems with  joints etc. They don’t exist!!! Reason being we were not designed by god to put our bodies under such strain. He said show me how many athletes there are over the age of 35 with great achievements.  His advice to me was Kol Hakavod you have done the main job but now only walk and swim and eat well.  I asked him what was better being 150KG or exercising hard like I am now what would he prefer. On this he agreed totally. In fact he added that someone who is a smoker should rather lose weight than give up smoking. In his experience the overweight has always been a major source for so many diseases and it was 100% sure that was what caused it. The last theory he had I will mention here is that told me  “There are more than 60 medications for Back Problems on the market”  He is of the opinion we are not treating the source of the problem only treating the symptoms. He believes a good massage and swimming would cure all back ailments. On this I tend to agree with him 100% .

Swimming has always been my backup Cardio and all round exercise in the last 2 years whenever I was injured . It is for sure a life saver for me. I have learnt from all this that I will continue to hammer my body for now and enjoy the Sports Addiction while I can and I am sort of youngish . When my time comes and god forbid my knees ache or my joints are sore I will just retreat into the water and get my massages. I can live with that !!
