VO2 Maxed Out

“VO2 Max is the maximum capacity of an individual’s body to transport and utilize oxygen during exercise”

Vo2 max is considered the standard indicator of cardiovascular or cardiorespiratory endurance and fitness.  Vo2 Max determines a person or athlete’s ability to perform prolonged aerobic activity.  VO2 Max is also known as known as maximal oxygen uptake, aerobic capacity, or maximal oxygen consumption. Basically it tells me how fit I am.

Why am I on about this now ? Well I just wanted to brag a little bit because I got my test results back from Wingate Institute for Sports Medicine and I am very happy with them .In fact I am over the roof. My result for VO2 Max was 57.9ml . Now this number meant nothing to me till I searched out in Google and found some tables for VO2 max rates relative to my age and their meaning. At this number I am considered to be in Superior Fitness :) . My only regret is that I am too old to enter a professional sport now and make a living from it.

If only I had lost the weight when I was young lad :) Have a look at the tables below I found that state what the VO2 max is for different Athletes. Take note of their age and my age(37). I could easily be a Pro Soccer\Basketball\ player with a score of 57.9

VO2 Max in Athletes

Genetics has a large role to play in the VO2 Max and training can add around 20% to it. It was in my genes and I did not even know it !!!!

Vo2 Max Table

When I went for my 1st test when starting the Winlife program this number was at 29.6ml(Very Poor) After around 8 months into the program it was at 39.9ml which is considered above average. After 2 years I have reached my Superior status :) I hope I can maintain it for the rest of my life in addition to my Weight Loss Maintenance. Maybe I should be looking for an endurance sport I could get into professionally at this age….. Hmmmm……. I am even willing to be sponsored and be treated as a lab rat if I am an anomaly.

My resting pulse rate when I started was 150kg was 77 beats per minute. I am now on 56 beats per minute which puts me into Athlete status once again as far as statistics go.

This is a separate post to my usual log which I hope there will be news tonight from my 1st external Winlife Aerobics Class. Will I survive ? To be Continued ……..
