Swimming is and old pastime of mine and probably most overweight people. I never exercised much in my life as an obese person but when I did it was always swimming because it was the only exercise I was capable of doing without causing myself serious injury. I also have loved it since I was a kid. In the past I have done a few month stretches here and there and had some success in losing a little weight form it but it was not a good overall thing that worked for me.

Today I love the swimming element and I like to swim at least twice a week for about an hour each time nonstop swimming. It’s a good burn off and I can burn around 700-900 calories in an hour. In addition to this swimming in my opinion builds great muscle and is a great toning tool too. It gives the upper body plenty of workout back, chest shoulders and arms .The legs get a good workout too. Overall it’s a great all rounder.

After quitting smoking cigarettes for 20 years I really wanted to get into my swimming seriously to test the difference with breathing. It was the most amazing thing even a week after quitting seeing how much my lungs were affected.  In fact the most of the time the only reason I stop swimming after an hour in the pool is due to the fact I have to head off to a new class not because I am tired.

When you get injured,  and most people who do sport will at some stage swimming is the only thing that can keep you sane from endorphin withdrawal. It also helps you keep a level of fitness whilst recovering. It is in short one the most handy tools out there to a great workout and an ace up your sleeve for pushing on when most injuries occur.
